Kick-Start Your Silver Dollar Collection With These Four Big “Firsts”

Since 1878, the U.S. Mint has struck only four different large Silver Dollar varieties: the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar, the Eisenhower Silver Dollar, and the American Eagle Silver Dollar. Now you can get the coins from the first full year of production of all four Silver Dollar types in this 1878–1986 Silver Firsts Collection.

1878 MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers and dance hall girls. While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!

1922 PEACE SILVER DOLLAR – While not produced in the same numbers as the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar series has seen its reputation grow with each passing year. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it features a design of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse. It was struck from in low relief from only 1922 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. Despite millions of Peace Silver Dollars being struck from 1922 to 1935, most were lost in circulation or melted down in mass silver meltings. In fact, coin experts believe that only 16% of all Peace Dollars remain in existence today

1971 EISENHOWER SILVER DOLLAR – Following the passing of President Dwight Eisenhower in 1969, the U.S. Mint quickly issued the 1971 Eisenhower Dollar. The first large-size dollar coin since the Peace Dollar series came to an end in 1935, “Ike” Dollars were also the last large-size dollar coins ever issued for circulation. The coin also paid tribute to the achievements of America’s space program by featuring an adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia on the reverse. The Eisenhower Dollar was struck in 40% silver from 1971-1976.

1986 AMERICAN SILVER EAGLE – First issued in 1986, the American Eagle Silver Dollar is perhaps the most widely collected silver coin in the world. The coin’s obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty from the 1916–1947 Half Dollar while the reverse boasts a stoic and symbolic Heraldic Eagle created by designer John Mercanti—the most prolific coin and medal designer in United States Mint history! Mercanti’s design remained in use until it was replaced in the middle of 2021—a run of 35 years!
