These Spanish 4 Maravedis are the very first coins minted in the New World. They were struck at the Santo Domingo Mint between 1516 and 1556. They circulated a mere 24 years after Columbus discovered America! The coins are from a small hoard accidently discovered in Jamaica 20 years ago when workmen digging a foundation found an old chest. When they opened it, they found the coins inside!
The obverse features a stylized Y (for Juana) with an "F" assayer mark and the denomination 4. Johanna, or Juana, was the Queen of Spain at this time. The reverse features two crowned pillars on one side flanked by the mint mark S and P for Santo Domingo.
Each is struck between 1516 and 1556 (dates vary) and is in circulated condition. A long lost historical treasure that's sure to be a conversation piece anywhere you show it.
