Almost a decade before the Civil War, America's giant copper cents were
minted for the very last time. It's hard to imagine, but these massive
coins are over four times heavier and almost twice as thick as a typical
penny. And our forefathers carried these "oversize pennies" around in
their pockets!
Then, in 1857, these giant coins were melted by the millions for their
copper and most were lost to the world forever. Craftsmen of that time often
purchased these large cents in 14,000-coin kegs and melted them down for
their work. This was a shrewd move because when copper prices rose in the
1850s, craftsmen actually paid less for the coins than the U.S. Mint paid
for the raw copper to strike the coins!
Today, collectors consider themselves lucky to own even a single example of
this early copper coinage. But now you can. You'll receive a beautiful
specimen guaranteed to be over 145 years old. Order your own United States
