World War II was an exhausting and costly war, but the seeds of victory in
Europe were planted in 1943. Though the Normandy Invasion was still a year
away, Allied operations in North Africa and Sicily laid the groundwork for
future amphibious invasions. They also introduced "Liberation" currency
to the troops as they freed the towns and villages of Sicily from the evil
clutches of Hitler's Nazis.
These $1 banknotes were of the 1934 & 1935 silver certificate series, but
had the added feature of a distinct yellow seal instead of the customary
blue seal. If these notes were to fall into enemy hands, they would have
immediately been declared invalid and rendered worthless. These notes were
originally to have been used in the North Africa Campaign code-named
"Operation Torch," but were later used when General Patton and the U.S.
Seventh Army invaded Sicily beginning on July 9, 1943.
Each $1 Liberation Note in this offer is a genuine piece of World War II
history and comes encapsulated in a protective holder and includes a special
easel for convenient display.
