1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative Given to America by France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has served as a welcoming symbol of freedom to millions of immigrants. 100 years later, the French struck just 5,000 Piedforts (a double thick coin) to commemorate the gift of Lady Liberty. Originally called “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the seven rays on her crown symbolize the seven continents and seas. The obverse of the Piedfort coin features a close-up of Lady Liberty’s face. Placed to the right are the dates 1886 and 1986. The reverse has the words “Liberty, Equality and Fraternity” in French. The coin is housed in a black presentation case.
