Even with our far-reaching global connections, we were only able to secure a very limited number of these massive Silver Kilos. Why are they so difficult to obtain? Everybody loves "firsts" and 2007 marks the year that the very FIRST coin was released as part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games coin program. It is also the FIRST time the Royal Canadian Mint has struck and released a coin with a guaranteed weight of one kilo! Adding to the urgency, the limited mintage of 2,500 is an astounding eight times less than the Silver Kilos issued for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. But you won’t have to pay eight times the price!
The theme for the 2007 Vancouver Olympic Silver Kilo is "Early Canada." The intricate design depicts Canada's diverse and abundant wildlife: a grizzly bear with a salmon in its mouth to represent the west coast, a plains bison for the prairies, a moose and a beaver for the central and eastern regions and a wolf and caribou for the north. The first peoples are represented in this design, both as individuals and through distinctive building forms which were influenced by the geography, climate and the available building materials. This coin design also displays Canada's rugged geography. The detail, beauty and craftsmanship of these 2007 Vancouver Silver Kilo is stunning!
