Shortly after the establishment of the gold depository at Fort Knox, a silver depository was opened at West Point, New York. It was adjacent to the nation's Military Academy. Later the U.S. Mint established a branch here to strike Silver Eagles. In order to identify those struck here, a special burnished finish was used along with the coveted "W" mintmark.
