It's not often you get to celebrate your 200th birthday, but George
Washington not only pulled off that feat, he also was able to celebrate his
250th birthday, too! With the help of the U.S. Mint, Washington's
milestone birthdays were not met solely with sales at clothing and houseware
chain stores. To celebrate the important anniversaries of Washington's
birth, the U.S. Mint struck commemorative coins, a commemorative quarter in
1932 to mark his 200th birthday and a commemorative Half-Dollar in 1982 for
his 250th celebration. Today, these pieces are two of the most popular coins
in American history!
The 1932 Washington Quarter was intended to be a one-year-only commemorative
coin, but due to overwhelming popularity, the U.S. Mint has used it as the
quarter design ever since — a remarkable span of more than 70 years! For
collectors of the new State Quarters, this coin is a must-have!
The 1982 Washington Commemorative Half-Dollar is important not just because
it celebrated George Washington's 250th birthday. It was also the first
commemorative half-dollar released since 1954 and the first 90% silver coin
produced by the U.S. Mint since 1964. The Brilliant Uncirculated specimen is
also interesting for the fact that more than twice as many Proof versions
were struck than BU versions!
