Bavarian Thalers from the 18th century feature the image of the Madonna and child. "Superstitious" mothers often filed the image of the Madonna to get a tiny bit of silver that they mixed into the food they fed their babies! Silver is a powerful antimicrobial, and this practice actually saved countless lives. Today, Madonna Thalers with these "mothers' marks" are prized. Each Silver Dollar—sized coin is over 200 years old and shows the Bavarian Emperor Maximilian on the reverse. A great piece of coin and "medical" history!
