The famous San Francisco Mint was an important source of silver coins in the
Old West. Morgan Silver Dollars produced here were quite popular in that
region, where their heft and purity garnered more respect than paper bills.
Today, "S" Morgan Silver Dollars are regarded as the most beautiful of
all, because they were created with such artistry and care. Now you can get
a Morgan from the first three decades it was struck at the San Francisco
Mint — and all from the 1800s. You'll receive an 1879-S Morgan, 1882-S
Morgan and a 1890-S Morgan — each in stunning Brilliant Uncirculated
condition.
Authorized by Congress in 1852, the San Francisco Mint opened in April 1854.
In 1874, the mint moved its operations to a new building in the center of
San Francisco. It acquired the nickname of the "Granite Lady" partly
because the building was constructed of granite, but more so because when
the devastating San Francisco shook the city in 1906, the San Francisco Mint
was the only institution open for business the next day.
