It's not taught in American history, but in 1861, the Confederate States of America struck its own coins.
They did it after they seized the fabled New Orleans Mint from the U.S. Government.
The Confederate States then struck this 1861—O Half Dollar. Although they were known to exist for decades, very few had ever been positively identified—until now! After scholars examined coins retrieved from the SS Republic, they noticed certain features on a small number of Seated Liberty Half Dollars that matched those of the CSA coins. The coins were then submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) who certified their provenance. Today, these 1861—O Half Dollars are universally recognized as coins struck by the Confederate States of America!
Here's your chance to take hold of a piece of newly discovered American history. But hurry, once this supply is gone, they are destined to disappear into history—again!
