In 1974 farmers digging a well found the Terracotta Army of China's first
emperor. The thousands of soldiers and horses were meant to accompany the
emperor into the afterlife. As the second issue in the Isle of Man's
History of Man Series, the 2009 Terracotta Army 2-piece Proof Silver Set
depicts the various processes involved in creating the soldiers and the
horses. The two large coins are 38.6 mm in diameter and weigh 28.28 grams
each. Struck from 92.5% sterling silver each coin has a hole in the center,
as did the coins of China's first emperor. The coins are housed in a
spectacular display case with a genuine replica terra cotta figure of "The
General"—one of the figures from the buried army. Only 10,000 sets were
minted, making this a sure to be sought after issue for future collectors.
