The original – and oldest — U.S. Mint is in Philadelphia. It was there
that the very first Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 1878, and where
they were struck each year of the coin's run from 1878 to 1904 and again
in 1921. This is your chance to get a Morgan from three of the five decades
it was struck at Philadelphia Mint.
You'll receive an 1881-P Morgan, 1897-P Morgan and a 1900-P Morgan
— each in stunning Brilliant Uncirculated condition. These coins will not
bear mint marks, however. That's because, as the first and only Mint when
it began striking coins in the late 1700s, there was no need for a mint
mark. The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia was established by an Act of Congress in
1791. However, no coins were struck there until 1793.
The first silver coins were minted a year later, and the first gold coins in
1795. The original U.S. Mint is also known as "The Mother Mint" because
all dies for the branch mints were prepared there. George T. Morgan was
assigned to this mint, where the first of his famous silver dollars were
struck in 1878.
