2014 Australian Silver Eagle
A historic first – with an American accent!
This 2014 Silver Eagle may not be from America. But Australia’s just-released 99.9% One Ounce Silver Proof has something in common with our own popular silver dollars: its iconic reverse image was created by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint – the same person responsible for the design of the American Eagle Silver Dollar!
A first-ever in numismatic history
Never before has a U.S. Mint Chief Engraver designed a proof coin for a world mint. But as the designer of more than 100 U.S. coins and medals, including the 1986 Statue of Liberty dollar coin, the 1990 Eisenhower Centennial silver dollar, and the U.S. State Quarters program, this proof’s one-year-only image of a native Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle is the latest in Mr. Mercanti’s long history of excellence – a historic first combining the artistry of a U.S. Mint engraver with the precision of the world-renowned Perth Mint!
Setting the world’s standard for high relief coins
Only a few coin issues in the world are struck each year as double-thick, high relief proofs. This is a time-honored minting technique going back to European kings, and is reserved for only the finest and most important coins. Only a handful of mints anywhere in the world are even capable of striking them.
Among them is Australia's Perth Mint, which perfected the difficult technology required to strike Koalas, Kangaroos and Kookaburra in stunning high relief. Now the artisans at the Perth Mint have done the same with Mr. Mercanti’s design for the first-year 2014 Australian Silver Eagle – bringing it to life on a high relief proof coin for the very first time.
Produced with polished dies that create a deep, concave field on the surface of the coin for maximum contrast, each high relief proof has been carefully struck using selected silver planchets – a process that requires increased pressure and sometimes multiple strikes to attain the desired mirrored effect.
Professionally certified and personally signed
Each perfect and near-perfect High Relief Australian Silver Eagle will be certified and graded by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), one of the major independent coin grading services in the world. And whether you’re talking fine wine, classic cars or silver dollars, smart collectors always seek out the finest quality they can afford.
When it comes to coins, quality means securing those that have earned the highest possible grades from respected independent grading services, such as PCGS – where coins are ranked on a 70-point system. Proof 70 (PR70) and Proof 69 (PR69) are at the top of the pyramid of perfection.
So immediately upon their arrival in the U.S., we submitted our entire allocation of 2014 High Relief Proof Silver Eagles to PCGS, where they were certified and rigorously graded. But it didn’t stop there. To add to each proof’s historic first-year provenance, each PCGS label will be personally autographed by Mr. Mercanti, with the details of its grade sealed in a protective acrylic holder.
