In 1865 the paddlewheel steamer SS Republic® steamed out of New York Harbor laden with a cargo including gold and silver coins destined for New Orleans to help rebuild the south at the close of the Civil War. She never made it. Caught in an unexpected hurricane, she sank off the coast of Georgia. For well over 100 years there she lay, undisturbed until she was found and salvaged, giving up her treasure trove of scarce coins and artifacts. Now through our exclusive agreement with Odyssey Marine Exploration, GovMint.com is bringing these treasures from the Civil War era directly to you.
