The First And Only Large-Size $1 Federal Reserve Note
This 1918 Banknote is the first and only large-size $1 note issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. More than 100 years later, less than one-half of 1% are believed to still exist! This large-sized “Horse Blanket Note” is eagerly sought-after by collectors, both for its unique size and the note’s unique design.
Defiant Eagle Says, “Don’t Tread On Me!”
Now more than a century old, this vintage note features the familiar portrait of George Washington we’ve come to know and love, but he’s been set off to the side to make room for the seal of the New York branch of the Federal Reserve Bank that backed the note. The obverse is completed with bold, eye-catching blue serial numbers and seal. The reverse is similarly impressive and where America can really be seen flexing its muscles with an image of a bald eagle carrying a U.S. flag in its talons like a war lance. Hailed today as the “Defiant Eagle” design, America’s national bird affected this aggressive pose to reflect America’s entrance into World War I.
Remarkable Choice Uncirculated Condition
This 1918 $1 Defiant Eagle Note is also classified as Fr #712, a designation that refers to the numbering system in the widely used Paper Money of the United States reference book written by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. The Fr numbers indicate varieties existing within a larger type design. Issued during the final year of the war, this note has survived in remarkable condition. In fact, the notes here have been graded by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) as being in Choice Uncirculated-64 (CU64) condition, with no folds or creases and only some — if any — handling present. It’s also been further pedigreed by PMG with an added Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) designation, meaning that it has not been physically, chemically, or materially processed to give it the appearance of a higher grade.
