This First And Only Federal Reserve Note Is A "Star"!

105 years after this first—and only—large-sized $1 Note was issued by the Federal Reserve Bank; it is estimated that only one-half of 1% still exists! A large "horse blanket" size, much bigger than today's currency, these notes feature eye appealing blue seal and blue serial numbers. The inscriptions include the notation "National Currency" at the top, indicating that even though the note was issued by one of the 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, it was valid everywhere in the U.S.

Certified By The World's Largest Third-Party Paper Currency Grader

This Note is graded in Very Good 10 (VG10) condition by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG), the world's largest third-party paper currency grader, which means it was actually used in commerce. This 1918 $1 Federal Reserve Ban Note is classified as Fr #734. This Fr designation refers to the numbering system in the widely used Paper Money of the United States reference book written by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. The Fr numbers indicate varieties existing within a larger type design. This note was one of three $1 Federal Reserve Bank Notes from the 1918 Series that was issued from the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank and features four signatures: Houston Benge Teehee, Register of the United States Treasury from 1915 to 1919; John Burke 24th treasurer of the United States from 1913 to 1921; Seymour S. Cook, the first cashier of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis; and Theodore Wold, the first governor and chief administrative officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis from 1914 to 1919. The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis was incorporated on May 18, 1914 as one of 12 district banks established after the signing of the Federal Reserve Act by President Woodrow Wilson on Dec. 23, 1913. Bank directors were elected during the summer.

Defiant Eagle Says, "Don't Tread On Me!"

Now more than a century old, this vintage note features the familiar portrait of George Washington we've come to know and love, but he's been set off to the side to make room for the large blue seal of the Minneapolis branch of the Federal Reserve Bank that backed the note. The obverse is completed with a bold, eye-catching blue serial number. The reverse is similarly impressive and where America can really be seen flexing its muscles with an image of a Bald Eagle carrying a U.S. flag in its talons like a war lance. Hailed today as the "Defiant Eagle" design, America's national bird affected this aggressive pose to reflect America's entrance into World War I. What makes this note really scarce is that it has a Star printed on it—indicating it's a replacement note for this serial number, which was misprinted. Star notes are very difficult to find!
