1935 $1 Silver Certificate North Africa Fine+
These Operation Torch World War II Silver Certificates Are Hot!
As the world celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of Second World War in 2020, coins and currency of the WWII era took on an added significance in the minds of many collectors. It was with that in mind that we assembled a small hoard of 1935 Series $1 Silver Certificates that were issued specifically to troops serving overseas.
Printed by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, these notes were used by U.S. troops in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa during World War II. Each Silver Certificate bears a stark yellow seal, allowing for easy identification — if they got into enemy hands, all yellow seal Silver Certificates could be swiftly demonetized. Now you can secure one of these $1 notes, each in Fine+ condition.
As we all know today, Operation Torch proved to be a success for the Allies in their fight against Nazi Germany and its Axis partners. The November 1942 invasion marked the first time the British and Americans jointly worked together on an invasion plan. The operation also marked the first time American General George Patton led troops in combat during World War II when he commanded an amphibious task force consisting of 33,000 men that landed in Morocco near Casablanca.
Were these notes in the pockets of Patton’s men as they overwhelmed the fierce resistance put up Vichy French forces? It’s possible, and now you can draft one into your collection where it’s sure to assume a place of honor!
