What’s-A-Motto With These 1935 Series $1 Silver Certificates?

During the Civil War, Congress passed a law stating that all U.S. coinage should include the motto “In God We Trust.” However, it took some time for the motto to make its way onto ALL of our nation’s money. The $1 Silver Certificate, for example, did not feature the motto until the 1935 series was issued – and even then, the motto didn’t appear until well into the printing of the series. In fact, paper currency experts estimate that $1 Silver Certificates from the 1935 Series that have the motto are 358 times rarer that those without the motto!

This set brings together two 1935 Series $1 Silver Certificates – one without the motto and a scarce one with the motto! Each note also comes in lightly circulated Very Fine (VF) condition. The 1935 $1 Silver Certificate Series began that year and ended in 1963. It had eight separate printing runs from A to H. (1935A-1935H). All bills of the series from 1935A until well into the printing of the 1935G issue did not carry the motto.

This is a wonderful first-year/last-year type set that will leave you wondering what these notes may have been used to purchase, and how the owners of these notes reacted the first time they reached into their billfold and found “In God We Trust” centered above the “ONE” denomination on the back of the note. Did they think it was a fake? Were they excited to see the change? Let your mind wander!
