Vintage Gold Liberty Type II
In January 1848, James Marshall found a big gold nugget at Sutter’s Creek in California. The cries of “Gold! Gold!” echoed from coast to coast and the California Gold Rush was on. The gold that flowed from California would soon enable the U.S. Mint to strike its first-ever U.S. Gold Dollar in 1849. But the story doesn’t end there...
In 1854, the design was changed to depict Lady Liberty as a Native American princess, but there was a problem: though the high-relief design was beautiful, it was too difficult to strike and the designs wore down too quickly. Changes were soon made and a “Type III” Gold Liberty was issued until the end of the series in 1889.
This Type II $1 Liberty Head gold dollar struck between 1854 and 1856 and is in collector grade of Extremely Fine (XF) condition. The attractive design features Miss Liberty on the obverse wearing a pompom headdress and a wreath enclosing the denomination of the reverse. This design was used by the mint between 1854 and 1856.

These small gold coins were never struck in large quantities, which by itself would certainly make them scarce today, over 160 years later. But their small size and the fact that they were used in daily commerce meant many were lost or simply wore out. Here's a great opportunity to add one or more of these of the 90% pure Type II Gold Dollars in Extremely Fine (XF) condition to your collection! Dates vary.
