1863 State of Georgia $10 Paper Currency Note AU-CU
1863 State of Georgia Civil War Note
As brother took up arms against brother in the American Civil War, folks in the South had a hard time coming by circulating money. People were hoarding their coins, and new currency was desperately needed. While the Confederacy did circulate its own paper currency, it wasn’t enough — and so states were also allowed to issue their own currency. In response, dozens of different governments and private agencies flooded the Southern economy with paper notes. States, municipalities, banks, railroads, and businesses all competed with the Confederate government in the issuance of currency.
This $10 note from the State of Georgia was printed in 1863 — the year the Rebels took a chance and invaded the North only to be defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg, a loss that saw the war turn irrevocably in the North’s favor. We recently acquired a hoard of 75 of these notes. That in and of itself is wonderfully unusual, but what makes them even better is that despite circulating heavily in the South, each note is still in About Uncirculated to Crisp Uncirculated (AU-CU) condition!
Since all Confederate notes were closely tied to the military situation, they became totally worthless following the South’s defeat in the Civil War. Most people threw them away or burned them for fuel. Trainloads of currency were captured by the Union Army and destroyed. Fortunately, some people did squirrel some of these notes away, often stored in dust-covered boxes in their attics or at the bottom of dresser drawers.
Today, these notes are valuable not for their face value, but because of their rarity and connection to the Civil War. This represents a great opportunity to hold authentic Civil War history in your hands! Click one to your cart today.
