Arguably the Most Prized Note in the Military Payment Certificate Series
Issued between 1946 and 1973, Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were notes used by United States military personnel as money when they were overseas. This $10 Note from the last official series — Series 692, 1970-73 — undeniably boasts the most American design of all: An actual Native American!
The Exciting Life of Chief Hollow Horn Bear
Depicted in full headdress, Brulé Lakota Sioux Chief Hollow Horn Bear is shown on one side while an American Bald Eagle with wings spread and talons in action appears on the reverse. Hollow Horn Bear was one of the nation’s most famous and influential Sioux leaders. He fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn and later served as the police chief at the Rosebud Indian Reservation. A skilled orator and negotiator, he made many trips to Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of the Lakota people shaking hands with such influential people as Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson.
Vivid Reminders of Wartime Experiences
Along with dog tags, combat boots and C-rations, Military Payment Certificates bring forth vivid memories of wartime experiences for GIs. Unlike standard U.S. currency, these notes were issued only to soldiers serving overseas, and were created to be tightly controlled and demonetized at a moment’s notice. Each circulated for only a short period of time, and most were destroyed — but not all! These scarce 1970–1973 $10 Chief Hollow Bear MPC Notes are available here in Fine to Very Fine condition.
