The banknotes issued by the Confederate States of America during the Civil War contain some of the most detailed and breathtaking engravings of Southern life ever printed. This famous Richmond, Virginia $100 note features a milk maid on the left and a large central engraving of a powerful locomotive with a steamship in the distance. The note promises to pay the bearer "interest at two cents per day"—but only "six months after...a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States." A Testament To The Economic Challenges Faced By The Confederacy

Lacking skilled engravers and secure printing facilities, the Confederacy often used unrelated designs in early banknote issues. Some themes included naval ships and historical figures, including George Washington. They were often referred to as "Gray-Backs" not because of the iconic color of Southern military uniforms, but because the blank backs of the notes acquired a dirty gray color while in circulation. By 1863, these notes were worth 33 cents to the dollar, and by 1865, they were worth less than 2 cents to the dollar. After the war ended, the bills became completely worthless and could not be converted into anything else—a lasting testament to the economic challenges faced by the Confederacy during the Civil War and the eventual collapse of its monetary system.
