Released on behalf of Samoa, a Polynesian island country in the South Pacific Ocean, this set features all 12 Lunar Animals on 44mm x 26.8 mm fan-shaped coins—Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig—along with a round 65 mm centerpiece coin featuring a person meditating. The obverse of each individual piece features the Samoa Coat of Arms, and the center coin’s obverse features the Samoa Coat of Arms as well as various artistic depictions of the Chinese New Year celebration.

Exquisite Legal-Tender Proof-Like Coins

Each coin in the set is 50 cents legal tender and was struck in copper-nickel (CuNi) and then layered in gleaming 24-karat gold. The 12, fan-shaped coins were each struck in 29 grams while the round centerpiece coin was struck in 89 grams. Adding to the exotic beauty of each coin is the exquisite Proof-Like (PL) finish. That means that even though these coins weren’t struck as proofs, their brilliant and reflective finish has earned them a “Proof-Like” designation, meaning they exhibit a higher-than-normal degree of reflectivity reminiscent of a Proof coin.
