/ THE MINT
The Beating Heart of America’s “Wild West” Mint
The Carson City Mint still stands today as part of the Nevada State Museum. It struck Carson City’s very first coin in February 1870, a Seated Liberty Dollar, a Seated Liberty Dollar, under the supervision of Mint Superintendent Abraham “Abe” Curry, giving birth to the famous “CC” mintmark. Since then, the Mint—and Coin Press No. 1—have made a journey across the landscape of American numismatics history.
Explore the Mint's History
When you step inside the building it feels like passing through a time portal greased with silver dust. Amid exhibits that display old mining gear, faded photographs, and mannequins that look too cheerful about life in the high desert climate of the Sierra Nevada foothills, sits Coin Press No. 1. It’s earned its reputation as one of the most remarkable pieces of coinage machinery ever built through decades of service.

/ COIN PRESS NO. 1
The Carson City Mint’s Original Press
Coin Press No. 1, the original press at the Carson City Mint when it opened in 1870, is a hefty marvel that’s still capable of turning heads—and turning out coins!

Built in 1869 by Morgan & Orr of Philadelphia, The Press was a Gleaming, Steam-Powered Masterpiece Capable of Spitting out 100 Coins a Minute.
That was no small feat during an age when cowboys were still shooting at each other over poker debts in saloons located just down the street. In 1869, the U.S. Treasury had ordered it brand new for the soon-to-open Carson City Mint, which was being built to handle the avalanche of silver pouring out of Nevada’s legendary Comstock Lode. Since then, it’s seen more history than a dog-eared deck of cards from one of those smoke-filled frontier saloons during the days of the Wild West.

Exclusive Partnership Creates Numismatic History
Thanks to an exclusive partnership between GOVMINT and the Nevada State Museum, the Carson City Mint and Coin Press No. 1 were fired up to strike gold and silver commemoratives that celebrate the Mint’s 155th anniversary. These pieces not only feature special Carson City mintmarks but were struck with the same designs that appeared on the first coins produced at Carson City; Seated Liberty Silver Dollars, the $10 Gold Liberty, and the $20 Gold Liberty. This legendary moment gives collectors the opportunity to own tangible pieces of Wild West history and feel the echo of the frontier in the palm of their hands.

Commemoratives Based On Original Vintage Designs
1870 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar
Designed by Christian Gobrecht—was the first coin struck at the Carson City Mint. It’s an exceptionally scarce piece, prized for its low mintage and historic “CC” mintmark.

1870 $10 Liberty Eagle
Also crafted by Gobrecht, the $10 Gold Liberty features his signature blend of realism and elegance. Produced in limited numbers at the Carson City Mint, original pieces are prized for their scarcity, distinctive mintmark, and contribution to the rich legacy of Western-minted U.S. gold.

1870 $20 Double Eagle
Designed by James B. Longacre, the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle became one of the most iconic gold coins of the 19th century, Carson City issues were struck n notably small quantities, giving them a rarity and desirability unmatched in much of the U.S. gold coinage. Their bold Liberty portrait and powerful eagle reverse remain hallmarks of Longacre’s classical style.

The Half-Ounce Gold Struck on the Legendary Coin Press No. 1
Minted on the same historic Coin Press No. 1 that produced the first Carson City coin in 1870, the 1/2oz gold commemorative carries more than precious metal – it carries legacy. The press has struck everything from Seated Liberty Dollars to modern pennies. Owning a medal struck on this legendary machine is like holding a living piece of American minting history.
