1726-1794 Dutch New York Penny Coin
Pre-American “New York Penny”
You know your company is an economic powerhouse when it issues its own money. While such a concept seems outlandish today, it actually happened in New York City! It occurred when New York still known as New Amsterdam. There was no United States of America, no mint and no circulating coins. Enter the Dutch West India Company, one of the world’s greatest international trading companies in modern history.
This one-duit coin is one of the oldest coins to circulate in the New World! Nicknamed the “New York Penny” for its use in the Dutch island of New Amsterdam – later renamed New York when the British took control – this coin features the West Indian Company’s prominent “VOC” monogram on the obverse and the Coat of Arms of the striking province on the reverse. Reverse designs include those from Holland, West Friesland, Zeeland or Utrecht. The coins remained legal tender in the Colonial America long after the Dutch ceded the territory to the British.
Each coin comes in Fine to Very Fine condition, struck between 1726 and 1794. You’ll also receive a deluxe information card and presentation folder. Date and reverse vary.
Hurry – order yours now because our supply of these significant coins could be gone in a New York minute!
