1747–1808 Half Real Atlantic Sands NGC Shipwreck Coin
The Accidental Discovery Of A Lifetime
During the second Project Mercury flight on July 21, 1961, the Liberty Bell 7 space capsule sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean where it would remain lost for almost four decades. In the spring of 1999, the Discovery Channel underwrote The Search for Liberty Bell 7 Expedition with Oceaneering International, Inc. to find and retrieve the lost spacecraft. The recovery of the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft would be the deepest commercial salvage operation in history. While mapping the ocean floor with sonar equipment, the recovery team not only found the missing capsule, but it also discovered something utterly amazing: a wooden object sitting next to it! To the team’s amazement, they found that it was a sunken sailing ship from the early 1800s.
Early American Spanish Silver Coins
On board was a wooden chest containing a large pile of silver coins—Spanish Silver ½, 1, 2, and 8 Reales—more than 1,300 pieces in all with dates ranging from 1736 to 1821 meaning many of them may have circulated in the 13 colonies during the Revolutionary War. Of that total, 682 have since been surveyed and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as exhibiting Shipwreck Effect! Here you can secure one of those pieces—a spectacular 1747–1808 Half Real silver coin recovered from what is now known as the Atlantic Sands Shipwreck Hoard, the deepest commercial salvage operation in history!
In addition to being authentic shipwreck coins, these coins are important for their role in early America. Spanish silver Reales played a crucial role in the early American economy, serving as a widely accepted currency during the colonial period. Their intricate designs and historical significance make them highly sought after by collectors and numismatists today.
