Late 1700s Spanish Silver "Portrait" Dollars

The Spanish 8 Reales was considered the workhorse silver dollar of early America. These coins here struck in the late 1700s were known as "Portrait" dollars due to the portrait of the Spanish king featured on the obverse. The reverse features a shield and crown. Coins like this were so trusted in America that they circulated in parts of the United states through the 1870s–even though Congress pulled its legal tender status in 1857! Because of the high silver content, many Spanish 8 Reales were later melted down to help produce U.S. trade dollars and even some Morgan Dollars.

Widely Circulated Coins From Colonial America

These Silver 8 Reales coin from 1770–1799 weren't just currency–they were a global standard. Struck in Spanish Colonial mints and widely circulated in Colonial America, they played a key role in everyday commerce across the New World. Their distinctive design, weight, and trusted silver content directly influenced the creation of the U.S. dollar. Because coins like this were frequently cut into eight pieces, or "bits," to make change, they acquired the "Pieces of Eight" nickname and helped popularize the slang "two bits" to mean a quarter dollar.

Graded In Fine To Very Fine Condition

Graded in Fine to Very Fine (F–VF) condition, each coin bears the wear of real-world use, offering a powerful, tactile connection to the age of revolution, independence, and global trade. A foundational artifact of monetary history– and a true ancestor of American coinage, many 8 Reales have been melted across the centuries, making coin in quality rather scarce. Once these are gone, they are gone for good.
