Who Struck This Mysterious Restrike?
In 1787, Benjamin Franklin helped design the Fugio Cent, which featured the words "Fugio" and "Mind Your Business" along with a sundial. For citizens of the recently-formed United States of America, the meaning was obvious: get to work, because time flies! The reverse featured 13 conjoined rings with a center ring reading "We are one." It's a beautiful design, which is why someone decided to restrike them in 90% silver. But just who restruck them is a mystery!
It's believed that the culprit may have been the Scovill Manufacturing Company, who then passed them off to Horatio Rust for distribution in the late 1850s. All we know for sure is that an estimated 300-400 copper restrikes were minted, along with an unknown number of silver and gold restrikes.
Today, it's estimated that only 35 of these silver restrikes still exist, graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) between About Uncirculated-53 (AU53) and Mint State-63 (MS63) condition. They're incredibly tough to get a hold of today. In fact, this is the first and only one of these coins we've ever been able to offer!
Not only is this a rare find for our customers, but we managed to track down one of these historic, mysterious restrikes certified by PCGS as incredible Mint State-62 (MS62) condition! That's just one grade away from being considered the finest known in the world of this already extremely limited mintage.
