1811 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle PCGS AU55 w/Green Label
Scarce 1811 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagle
The year was 1811, and James Madison, the “Father of the Constitution,” was in office as the fourth President of the United States. The first steam-powered ferry began operation between New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey. American troops led by William Henry Harrison defeated Chief Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe. And in Philadelphia, the United States Mint struck this 1811 Capped Bust $5 Half Eagle!
Minted from 1807 to 1815, the Type I Capped Bust Half Eagle is a true American treasure. Sometimes referred to as the “Draped Bust,” it’s estimated that only 300 coins still exist in any grade — and only 130 have been graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Yet, after nearly 210 years, this coin has survived in About Uncirculated-55 (AU55) condition with little wear and lots of original mint luster!
Graded by PCGS, this coin comes sealed in a protective holder decorated by PCGS’s older green label. Coins in these holders don’t come to market very often, making this even more of a great find! Struck more than two centuries ago, this is fantastic piece of American numismatic history! Add it to your collection today!
