America’s Pocket Change in the 19th Century

This beautiful coin pays tribute to one of our nation’s most famous coin designers, Christian Gobrecht, who was the United States Mint’s Third Chief Engraver 1840-1844. It was during his time as the Mint’s “Second” engraver from 1835-1840, however, that he created the Seated Liberty design that appears on this silver half dollar a design that would go on to grace every U.S. coin denomination from the half dime to the silver dollar.

Gobrecht’s Famous Seated Liberty Design

In this offer you’ll get Gobrecht’s famous Seated Liberty Half Dollar that was struck for more than a half century from 1839 to 1891 in highly pure 90% fine silver. It was called a “Seated Liberty” due to the design of Lady Liberty seated on a rock and holding a Liberty Cap. The coin’s reverse depicts an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. This design proved to be so durable and popular that it continued to be struck long after Gobrecht had passed away, firmly establishing Gobrecht’s legacy as one of the most renowned engravers in American history. Among his fans were Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was certainly a big feather in Gobrecht’s posthumous hat!
