Rare Sunken Gold from the SS Republic

How would you like to possess the “finest known” piece of real U.S. sunken treasure? Well, now you can with an 1842-P $10 Gold Liberty recovered from the famous SS Republic shipwreck.

This incredible piece is one of just two coins of this date found in the wreck of the SS Republic. And while the first grades in About Uncirculated-53 (AU53) condition, this one has been certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in About Uncirculated-55 (AU55) condition, making it the finest of its date, type and designation!

Originally known as the SS Tennessee, the Republic was a Confederate vessel used as a blockade runner -- a lighter, smaller ship whose job was to sneak around or through enemy blockades in order to transport supplies. Unfortunately for the Confederacy, the Union Navy captured the ship in 1862 at the Battle of New Orleans, refitted it and sent it back into war as a well-armed fighting machine.

Then, in 1865, the ship was damaged in a storm. Not wanting to repair the Tennessee a second time, the Union sold it to a private New York shipping magnate. A second refitting occurred, and the ship set sail once again under its current name – the SS Republic.

In the post-Civil War era, the Republic was used to run cargo and money from New York to New Orleans to help with the rebuilding and expansion efforts there. But less than a year after it was purchased by the shipping magnate, the Republic went down off the coast of Georgia, the victim of a nasty hurricane. When she slipped beneath the Atlantic’s churning waves, she took with her $400,000 in rare 19th century gold and silver coins estimated at being worth today as much as $180 million!

The wreck was located in 2003, and many of the coins that have been recovered have already been snatched up by eager collectors – but not this rare piece. Make this real piece of American sunken treasure yours and order now!
