One-Year-Only 1853 Seated Liberty Silver Half Dollar

For decades, Liberty took a seat on our nation’s half dime, dime, quarter and half dollar. Minted in 90% fine silver, these coins were quite popular — especially as the price of silver began to rise. Eventually that cost grew so high that in 1853 the U.S. Mint decided to cut the overall weight of the half dollar from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams.

To signal the change, the design was updated for one year only, with arrowheads placed alongside the date and rays around the eagle. This Arrows and Rays variety is a key part of any U.S. collection, so secure yours now in Fine condition, struck in New Orleans or Philadelphia. Mint mark varies.

The 1853 Seated Liberty Silver Half Dollar Arrows and Rays coin is a fantastic and coveted coin that was issued for one year and one year only. While the rays were removed from the design at the end of production in 1853, the arrows lingered on for another two years. In 1856, with the new weight solidly established, the arrows were removed for good.
