Own a Remnant of the California Gold Rush Era!

In 1848, the discovery of gold in California spurred the great California Gold Rush, where thousands upon thousands ventured west in search of their fortune. It’s one of the most significant events in American history, and now you can own a piece of that story!

California Fractional gold coins (also known as "Cal Fracs") represent a time when a lack of money, especially in small change, had Wild West-erners turning to private jewelers who struck 25 cent, 50 cent and 1 dollar gold coins for everyday commerce.

Even with the official San Francisco Mint opening in 1854, these privately-struck coins continued to serve as the backbone of western commerce for several years. They came in several different shapes and designs, but generally were round or octagonal and featured a Liberty or Indian design similar to those on regular-issue U.S. Mint coinage.

Struck with an octagonal Liberty design, this 1854 25 Cent BG-105 Cal Frac is one of less than 500 known. According to NGC, only three of these have been certified Mint State-66 (MS66) condition, including this very coin -- with only two others graded higher!
