Uncut Sheet of 1857 Obsolete Notes

What a find! For paper currency collectors, this is an incredible opportunity — a full, uncut sheet of obsolete notes from 1857. Printed for the Western Exchange Fire & Marine Company in Omaha, Nebraska, this sheet contains four different denominations — $1, $2, $3 and $5 — each with its own beautiful central vignette., including Native Americans, buffalos, trains and steamboats. The notes include:

  • The $1 Note recreates a wonderful scene of American Indians watching as a steam locomotive huffs and puffs its way past in the background. A portrait of an unknown man, possibly Western Exchange Fire & Marine President George Greene, is seen in the lower left corner.
  • The $2 Note shows an American Indian standing beside his horse watching other members of his party hunting buffalo in the background while a distant steam train chugs along in the distance. A portrait of the same man featured on the $1 note is featured in the lower left corner.
  • The $3 Note features an American Indian with a bow and arrow hunting buffalo. The portrait of Marquis de Lafayette, a French citizen who commanded American troops during the Revolutionary War, is featured in the lower left corner.
  • The $5 Note depicts the riverboat steamer Omaha. The portrait of American statesman Daniel Webster is in the lower left corner and the portrait of President Franklin Pierce is in the lower right corner.

It was a different era in American commerce when these notes were originally released. During this pre-Civil War era, Spanish coins were still accepted as legal tender and, since there was no government-issued paper currency, private companies were able to print their own notes for circulation. But what really makes this set of notes so unique is that these notes never circulated! Plus, the complete uncut sheet comes in Crisp Uncirculated (CU) condition.

Perfect for framing, this Wild West-themed sheet measures approximately 7¼" x 12" and will make a spectacular conversation piece wherever it is displayed. Secure this authentic fragment of American history today!
