1861-P $2.50 Gold Liberty XF
Civil War $2.50 Gold Liberty
As the Civil War got underway in 1861, the U.S. Mint churned out these $2.50 Gold Liberty Quarter Eagles and released them into circulation, not knowing the hard road they would travel to reach us today. Due to the war, inflation increased and then raged during the early 1860s, and virtually all U.S. gold coins were plucked from circulation. The vast majority of the gold coins that survived the war were later melted or confiscated by the government in the 1930s.
As is the case with all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins, only a small fraction of those coins exists today. Over the 150 years since these Quarter Eagles were struck, many more were just plain lost. But as a result of an incredible find and only while our supplies last, you can get this Civil War-era U.S. gold piece in Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
This beautiful coin features the famous “Coronet Head” design created by Christian Gobrecht, who served as the U.S. Mint’s third Chief Engraver from 1840 until his death in 1844. The design features a large head of Liberty wearing a wide coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Her hair is pulled back in a bun and held in place by a string of pearls. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the design. Gobrecht’s fame as a coin designer lived on long after his passing as coins bearing his designs were still being struck more than 60 years later.
