The First American Naval Battle Between Iron-Clad War Vessels -- Coined!

On March 9, 1862, the most famous and important naval battle of the American Civil War pitted two iron-clad ships against each other. "Coined" the Battle of Hampton Roads for it's location at Hampton Roads, Virginia, the Union’s iron-clad steamer Monitor, and the Confederate warship Merrimac went to battle. At first, the battle seemed a bit one sided, as the Merrimac boasted twelve guns while the Monitor only had two! In the end, the Union ship with only two guns emerged victorious and sped away to Chesapeake Bay, to engage with similarly iron-clad Confederate ship, the Virginia.

The second battle of the day begins with the Monitor and the Virginia opening fire ... then, nothing much happened. The cannonballs simply bounced off the two ships! Eventually -- possibly due to boredom -- the Virginia pulled back and left. Neither ship suffered serious damage, but the events of these two days gained the attention of nations around the globe. It began a new era of naval warfare!

Now bring this incredible piece memorializing American Civil War history home to admire again and again in a rich copper coin!
