The Famous Longacre Indian Head Cent
The Indian Head cent was struck from 1859 to 1909—a 50-year time period that saw America through important historical periods such as the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, the Spanish-American War, and Turn of the 20th century. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre (1794–1869), the United States Mint’s 4th Chief Engraver, and depicted not a Native American but a representation of Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. The coin was struck in copper-nickel from 1859 to 1864, but that would soon change when brother fought brother.
Historic Small-Cent Currency From The Civil War
As copper-nickel began disappearing during the Civil War, the U.S. Mint was forced to begin striking the coin in bronze midway through 1964 and continued to strike it in bronze until it was replaced by the Lincoln Cent in 1909. This 1865 Indian Head Bronze Cent was struck during the last year of the Civil War when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Union Ulysses S. Grant in April at Appomattox Courthouse, ending the bloody Civil War. It will come in Good to Very God (G–VG) condition. Supplies are limited so order now!
