Comprised of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indian tribes, the village was located in southeastern Montana on the banks of what the Indians called The Greasy Grass River but was known to Whites as the Little Bighorn River. The regiment suffered a catastrophic defeat and every man under the direct command of Custer, a full five companies, was wiped out to the last man. Known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the engagement has also come to be referred to as Custer’s Last Stand.
