A Historic Debut with Five Different Varieties Equals One Amazing Set!

Even legends can have their first hiccups. Case in point: the magnificent Morgan Silver Dollar. When the first coins of the series left the Philadelphia Mint's machines in early 1878, the heraldic eagle on each coin's reverse sported eight tail feathers. However, in the middle of March, United States Mint Director Henry Linderman ordered a design adjustment that needed to take place immediately -- right in the middle of the run. The change? A reduction of one feather from the eagle's tail! As a result, production ceased after only 749,500 coins featuring the original design were struck.

Production of Morgans with the revised design started in short order. To save money, some of the already-created eight tail feather dies we re-cut to show only seven. However, some of these dies didn't quite pull off the task completely. One in particular had the very distinct tips of five tail feathers peeking underneath the plume of seven, producing a variety that's referred to today as the 7/8 Tail Feathers Strong. Another re-cut die sported a better effort, but still had the tiny remnants of three tail feathers remaining -- known now as the 7/8 Tail Feathers Weak. Eventually, the Philadelphia Mint got it all sorted out, finally striking 1878 Morgans with seven tail feathers. (Fortunately, San Francisco's dies featured seven tails from the very beginning, bypassing the mess completely!) Now, you can own these five varieties of the Morgan's remarkable debut in one set!

  • FIVE MARVELOUS MORGANS! -- To recap, you'll receive five Morgan Silver Dollars all minted during the coin's debut year and all featuring the time-honored creations of George T. Morgan:
    • An 1878 Philadelphia Eight Tail Feathers
    • An 1878 Philadelphia 7/8 Tail Feathers Strong
    • An 1878 Philadelphia 7/8 Tail Feathers Weak
    • An 1878 Philadelphia Flat Breast (Second Reverse) Seven Tail Feathers, and
    • An 1878 San Francisco (featuring seven tail feathers)

  • AUTHENTIC U.S. LEGAL TENDER -- Of course, each of these 90% fine silver coins is one dollar U.S. legal tender. (They are silver dollars, after all!)

  • CERTIFIED MINT STATE -- All five coins will come certified Mint State-63 (MS63) by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). This distinction means that your coins will feature good strikes, surviving over a century with only moderate marks or hairlines -- not a small feat! In addition, each coin will be sonically sealed in its own individual acrylic holder, giving you the best in protection while granting clear sightlines into every beautiful detail.

  • AMONG THE LAST TO SURVIVE! -- Facing everything from circulation wear to the heat of smelters, 85% of the millions of Morgans originally minted have disappeared according to expert estimates! Not counting those squirreled away in collections, beautiful Mint State-condition Morgans like these are getting harder to find!

Not only is this an incredible varietal set featuring one of the most collected series in the world, it's also a fun way for you and your family to see how the designs of coins like the Morgan Silver Dollar can vary -- even within a single year! However, it's becoming increasingly difficult to create sets like these as more Morgans are stashed away in private collections year after year. Don't miss out on this opportunity to bring history to your home -- order yours now!
