Early-Date 1879 San Francisco Morgan Silver Dollar

First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the workhorse coins of the American Wild West. Struck in 90% silver, they're believed to be the most widely collected and coveted Silver Dollar in U.S. history — perhaps in part because their numbers were dramatically slashed by the Pittman Act of 1918, which called for millions of Morgans to be melted. It's believed that as few as 15% of all Morgans still exist today in any condition.

Fabulous Morgans Struck At San Francisco's Granite Lady

And of all the Morgans ever struck, collectors believe that the most beautiful are those that bear the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint. In fact, the first five Morgans struck in San Francisco are regarded by many numismatists as the best-struck Morgans of the entire series! And now you secure this dazzling second-year-of-issue 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint.

This coin was actually struck at the San Francisco Mint's second building, construction on which was completed in 1874. The building was soon nicknamed the "Granite Lady" due to its massive two-story structure built out of granite to handle the heavy minting equipment. This second building remained in operation for 63 years and was the only financial institution left standing and still in operation following the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR COIN - The Morgan Silver Dollar — so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan — has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America's "Wild West" and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers and dance hall girls.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS - Morgan's historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER - Struck in 26.73 grams of 90% fine silver from the famous Comstock Lode, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
  • LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR - Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America's Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • NICE EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION - Your 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar will come in nice collector-grade Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS - While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!
