This Jackass Is A Real Beauty

This 1880 $10 Legal Tender Note is known informally as the “Jackass Note.” It’s been graced with that rather stubborn moniker not because it isn’t beautiful. Far from it. It’s a work of art, with the bust depicting Daniel Webster, lawyer, Congressman, Secretary of State on the left, and a vignette of the Indian maiden Pocahontas on the right. Pocahontas, modestly looking slightly down, is being introduced to an assemblage of Europeans, ranging from royalty in a large chair to a sitting Turk smoking a long pipe.

So, with all that imagery, how in the world did this note attain such a dubious title? Simple; just turn it upside down and the eagle on the face of the bill resembles the head of a donkey! That may sound incredible but don’t let that fool you, this note is also ranked #71 out of 100 in Q. David Bowers book, The 100 Greatest American Currency Notes.

Graded By PMG In Choice Uncirculated Condition

This 1880 $10 Jackass Note” is also classified as Fr #107, a designation that refers to the numbering system in the widely used Paper Money of the United States reference book written by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. The Fr numbers indicate varieties existing within a larger type design. This particular note has also been certified and graded by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) as being in Choice Uncirculated-64 (CU64) condition, with no folds or creases and only some — if any — handling present. It’s also been further pedigreed by PMG with an added Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) designation, meaning that it has not been physically, chemically, or materially processed to give it the appearance of a higher grade.

This Legal Tender Note was issued by, and represents an obligation of, the U.S. Government. As stated on the reverse, this note could be used for all public and private debts. In addition, it was not backed by gold or silver making it fiat currency similar to the currency currently in circulation.
