1880 4 Dollar Coiled Hair Stella Pattern Gilt Judd-1661a PCGS PR62
One of the Rarest Pieces in American Numismatics!
In 1880, the Philadelphia Mint was working on creating a four dollar gold coin. Several options were struck as patterns, including the two we’re offering to you today! This $4, or "One Stella," pattern proof features Lady Liberty on the obverse, with her coiled up in a tighter hair style. Along the edge of the obverse is a specific detailing of the intended 90% gold coin’s gold, silver and copper contents. These patterns, however, were struck in copper and gilded in gold.
The reverse is interesting in that it provides not one, but three versions of its denomination, stating that it is "ONE STELLA," "400 CENTS" and "FOUR DOL." This 1880 Coiled Hair Stella Pattern, known as Judd-1661a, comes graded by PCGS as Proof-62 (PR62) condition. This is the only known pattern of its type graded by PCGS and is one of perhaps 15 to exist. Secure this American treasure now from GovMint.com!
