Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars—One Of America’s Most Coveted Collector Coins

There’s no doubt about it. Morgan Silver Dollars are among the most sought-after collector coins in America. For generations, their big size, hefty silver content and vintage 19th century design have secured their place at the top of the collecting pyramid. And among the most prized Morgans are those that were struck at the fabled Carson City Mint. Notoriously difficult to find—especially in uncirculated quality—most “CC” Morgans were quickly absorbed into the monetary stream in the American West where many were worn or damaged in circulation. Many more were later melted for their silver. If not for the accidental discovery of some Carson City Morgans in the U.S. Treasury vaults in the 1960s, coins like the 1880-CC Morgans available here may have always been almost impossible to find. Today, these coins are still exceptionally difficult to find, but we have a small number available!

Struck From Comstock Lode Silver

Morgan Silver Dollars were made possible by the discovery of the Comstock Lode silver deposit in Nevada in the 1850s. With all the new silver available, Congress authorized the largest striking of silver dollars ever in United States history. The new coin, designed by U.S. Mint assistant engraver George T. Morgan, quickly became known as the Morgan Silver Dollar. They were struck in highly pure 90% fine silver mined from the Comstock Lode. Hundreds of millions were minted between 1878 and 1921. These big silver coins become part and parcel of the Wild, Wild West, with gamblers stacking them high on poker tables and outlaws robbing trains and banks to get them.

Scarce Wild West Dollars From The Carson City Mint

Surprisingly, the Carson City Mint struck the Morgan for only 13 years, with its total mintage for all years combined making up just 2% of the total mintage of all Morgan Silver Dollars struck between 1878 and 1921. Now, after years of being worn in commerce, scratched in saddle bags, and melted down for their precious metal, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a shadow of its former self. It’s estimated that as few as 15% of these beautiful Wild West silver dollars remain for modern collectors to covet and stash away in their private collections. Because of their immense popularity, however, Morgan Silver Dollars have become harder and harder to find over the years. This 1880 Carson City Mint Silver Dollar is a great tribute to the craftsmen at the mint. It’s a superior example graded in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and displays the coveted “CC” mintmark on the reverse under the eagle. Each year these “Comstock Lode” Morgans get harder and harder to find, so snap this one up now!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • BIG SILVER COINS – Struck in 26.73 grams of 90% silver, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar will come in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today, coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!

The Carson City Mint was closest to the source of the silver being used to strike Morgans: The Comstock Lode in Nevada. Carson City Morgans feature crisp strikes and frosty surfaces and are among the most desirable of ALL Morgans.
