1882-O/S Morgan Silver Dollar VF–XF
1882 Morgan With A Dual Mint Mark!
In 1882, the San Francisco Mint sent three, lightly used Morgan Silver Dollar dies to the New Orleans Mint to aid the “Big Easy Mint” in its growing production of the coin. It was thought that mint employees in New Orleans would remove the “S” mint mark and replace it with their New Orleans “O” mint mark. Instead, they just re-stamped the die with the new “O” mint mark over the top of the old “S” creating an accidental dual mint mark coin. Talk about a big-time “Oops” moment!
Scarce Morgans From The Big Easy
More than just an admonishment from mint officials, the New Orleans Mint’s mistake led to a major variety of Morgan Silver Dollar! In fact, when we last checked, there have been just 9,115 of these dual mint-marked 1882-O/S Morgan Silver Dollar variety coins submitted to the country’s premier third-party grading services, the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in ANY condition. That makes these coins here graded in Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF–XF) condition even more desirable. And, when you consider the fact that one of the knocks on ALL Morgans from the New Orleans Mint is their reputation as being consistently the lowest quality coins among all the mints that struck the fabled coins, that means these beauties are a real find!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- SCARCE DUAL MINT MARK – This 1882-dated Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint on lightly used Morgan Silver Dollar dies from the San Francisco Mint. Instead of removing the “S” mint mark and replacing it with an “O” mint mark, New Orleans Mint employees simply re-stamped the die with the “O” mint mark over the top of the old “S” creating an accidental dual mint mark coin.
- AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921.
- BIG SILVER COINS – Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin 38.1 mm in diameter.
- CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings.
- VERY FINE TO EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION – Your dual mint-marked 1882-O/S Morgan Silver will come in Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF–XF) condition.
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!
