A Top 100 Morgan Silver Dollar Error Variety

In the 1880s, Nevada’s Comstock Lode was in full production, with loads of silver making its way East for striking at the Philadelphia Mint. Among the coins struck were these Morgan Silver Dollars, minted in 90% fine silver. The Morgan circulated heavily around the United States, and eventually as much as 85% of all Morgans struck wound up being worn down or melted for their silver, meaning only a fraction of the original mintage has survived for today’s collectors.

Unique Top 100 VAM Variety

Amid those survivors, some very interesting “error” coins have also been discovered. Take this beauty for example. Hailed as a Top 100 Variety, it’s known as a VAM-2. What is a VAM? The term “VAM” refers to the initials created by Leroy C. Van and A. George Mallis, who co-authored The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars which lists every die variety of each coin currently identified. Each VAM has been assigned a number used to identify its listing in Van Allen and Mallis’ work. The VAM variety available in this offer is an 1887/6 VAM-2 where the lower curve of a 6 protrudes from the bottom right of the 7 in the date. The variety was created when 1886 dies had the last digit of the date removed and replaced with a 7. However, the mint worker did not completely remove the 6, leaving a trace of the bottom loop. The strength of the overdate is such that this variety has earned a place among the coins listed in the guidebook, adding to its universal desirability among Morgan Dollar collectors.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar — so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan — has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers and dance hall girls.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • TOP 100 VAM COIN – This coin has been identified as a VAM-2 error variety where the lower curve of a 6 protrudes from the bottom right of the 7 in the date. The strength of the overdate is such that this variety has earned a place among the Top 100 coins listed in The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • HIGH-GRADE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your coin was graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS64) condition.
  • SPECIAL GREEN LABEL – This coin will come in an acrylic holder with a green NGC label that assures that is an exceptional quality coin based on standards established by the Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA).
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence — and fewer still remain in Mint State-64 Uncirculated condition!
