Scarce "Hot Lips" Morgan From The New Orleans Mint

No, this isn't "Hot Lips" Houlihan from M*A*S*H*, it's the famous 1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar that features a minting error which resulted in the doubling of Miss Liberty's lips. This particular error wasn't discovered until the mid-1900s, and no one is sure how many of these error types ever escaped the inspectors at the New Orleans Mint when they were struck more than 140 years ago! And, between those lost or worn out in circulation and the millions upon millions that were melted for their precious silver, it's a good bet that this coin isn't going to be readily available.

A Visually Striking, Hard-To-Find Error Coin

The best guess as to how many of the coins remain in existence comes from the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) which stated in a March 26, 2024 population report that only 1,142 of these coins exist in ANY condition. That means out of the New Orleans Mint's 1888 Morgan mintage of 12,150,00 coins, only 0.009% of the entire mintage bears this variety! That means that the1888-O "Hot Lips" Morgan Silver Dollar isn't just a visually striking error coin, it's also VERY hard to find! So, act fast and secure one for your collection now in nice Good to Fine (G–F) condition!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ·     SCARCE, "HOT LIP" ERROR COIN – This 1888-dated Morgan Silver Dollar coin is a scarce error coin nicknamed the "Hot Lips" Morgan for a minting error at the New Orleans Mint which resulted in the doubling of Miss Liberty's lips.
  • ·     AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar–so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan–has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America's "Wild West" and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • ·     BIG SILVER COIN – Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin measuring 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
  • ·     CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan's historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • ·     FAMOUS "O" MINT MARK – The New Orleans Mint is famous for being the only American mint to be controlled by three different governing bodies during its lifetime. It was first governed by the United States of America, then the State of Louisiana when it seceded from the Union prior to the Civil War, and finally the Confederate States of America following the onset of the war. The United States regained possession in 1862. The famous "O" mint mark on the reverse of these coins is a living reminder of this historic mint's epic history.
  • ·     GOOD TO FINE CONDITION – Your 1888-O "Hot Lips" Morgan Silver Dollar will come in nice Good to Fine (G–F) condition.
  • ·     THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGAN – Despite millions of Morgan Silver Dollars being struck from 1878 to 1921, most were lost in circulation or melted down in mass silver meltings. In fact, coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence today!
