1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar Double Die Obv. PCGS XF40
1888-O "Hot Lips" Double Die Obverse Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS XF 40
Known as "Hot Lips," this Morgan variety is very scarce in Extremely Fine condition. Prominent doubling of Liberty's lips can be seen with the naked eye. Despite the high mintage of 12 million, only 2,254 have been identified with this variety. The highest grade known for this variety is in MS62 at NGC, of which only 1 is known!
This double struck Morgan is classified as a VAM-4 and nicknamed "hot lips," due to the prominent doubling at Liberty's lips. Doubling can also be noticed from the eyelids down to the chin, with two complete sets of lips, chin and nose, which is clearly visible. Her hair is filled, along with lower parts of the ERT in "LIBERTY". The wheat and cotton leaves above LIBERTY are doubled strongly to the right. This particular variety in the 1888-O series is hard to find in high grade About Uncirculated condition, and it's very scarce in Mint State condition.
Each coin was struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, the only mint to be governed by three bodies during its existence (U.S., State of Louisiana, and the Confederate States of America). Each coin features an "O" mintmark on the bottom reverse attesting to its origin.
