Small Hoard Reveals High-Grade 1888-P Morgan Silver Dollars
Hoards like this are not easy to come by, but when we heard about it, we jumped into action! We recently secured a 48-coin hoard of Morgan Silver Dollars, each struck in 1888 at the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia and each in nice collector grade quality. This particular coin comes certified as Gem Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS64) condition by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Grading service varies.
A Morgan Silver Dollar certified in this high grade means that is never circulated and retains all of its texture and designs as though it was only recently struck at the mint. Such high-grade coins are few and far between and are by far the most desirable among collectors.
According to numismatists, as little as 15% of all Morgans struck still exist in any condition. Even fewer have been certified as Gem MS64. In fact, just 13% of all 1888-P Morgans are graded higher than MS63. This is sure to be a great find for your collection, but you’d better hurry; these coins will not last for long!
- AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR AND COLLECTED COIN – Designed by U.S. Mint Engraver George T. Morgan, the Morgan Silver Dollar was struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Today it is one of the most popular and heavily collected of all United States coins.
- STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
- LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
- COMES IN HIGH-GRADE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – This 1888-P $1 Morgan has been graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in Mint State-64 (MS64) condition. Grading service varies.
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence – and fewer still remain in Choice Uncirculated condition!
