1891 $1 Martha Washington Silver Certificate Fine
The 1891 Martha Washington Note
In 1886, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving introduced the very first $1 Silver Certificates. These notes were backed by their value in silver dollars held by the U.S. Treasury, and could be redeemed for a hefty Silver Dollar. The note itself bore the image of Martha Washington, the “Mother of Our Country,” and the first real (not allegorical) woman to grace a U.S. paper currency note with her portrait.
The Martha Washington $1 Silver Certificate note has been ranked as #50 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. The note was so popular that Martha Washington returned for a second series with a slightly revised design in 1891. And now you can secure one of these 1891 beauties. The note features the portrait of Martha Washington on the left side of the front. The back features an attractive, elaborate design. Plus, each note comes in Fine (F) condition, meaning it actually circulated in commerce!
